Three master’s programmes would start in the academic year 2023–2024 at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras.

Development Studies, English Studies, and Economics are among the two-year programmes that the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences will provide. The present five-year integrated M.A. Programme will be replaced by the M.A. programmes.

Indian students have been given a total of 25 seats in each stream. International students will have supernumerary access to the programmes. The application period will open in March–April 2023, and classes will start in July. An entrance exam will be required for admission.

According to Institute Director V. Kamakoti, the curriculum was restructured to increase accessibility. Any discipline’s students are welcome to apply for the M.A. programmes. For the future generation of students to face and address the various difficulties offered by the current world, such a type of humanities and social science exposure is crucial. The students will be trained as subject-specific specialists with an international focus and a national focus, so this extended list of M.A. programmes will open up new opportunities for placement and employability, he said.

The new programmes would include interaction with current challenges, such as climate change, sustainability, urbanization, and others; evidence-based policy assessments; the role of technology in influencing socioeconomic development; data science and governance.

The course curriculum for the M.A. programmes would be reorganized to include more modern topics, like computational linguistics, urban planning and development, health policy, environmental humanities, and climate economics.
