PhD is Not Mandatory for Assistant Professor Positions, Says UGC Chairman

Prof. M Jagadeesh Kumar, Chairman of the University Grants Commission, UGC, stated that a PhD is not required for Assistant professor positions during the inauguration of the UGC-HRDC building on the Osmania University (OU) campus. He stated that UGC NET qualified applicants are eligible to apply for Assistant Professor positions in universities and colleges.

As of the implementation of the most recent revision, candidates will no longer be required to obtain a Ph.D. for Assistant professor positions. UGC NET shall serve as the criterion for eligibility. Currently, a Ph.D. is necessary for professor or associate professor recruitment.

Generally, a Ph.D. typically requires three to four years of full-time study or five to six years of part-time study. This can be accomplished by enhancing the knowledge of others, performing diverse professions that benefit society, applying acquired abilities to research initiatives, enhancing the performance of coworkers, and making scientific breakthroughs. In today’s competitive environment where there are huge employability issues, such a move by the UGC will certainly give mileage to UGC-Net qualified students and they can pursue Ph.D with the job in part time mode and advance their career growth further.

Recently, UGC has also drafted new Ph.D. Regulations for 2022 under which an undergraduate with a minimum of 75% marks can pursue a Ph.D. in India, thus giving immense opportunities to students who wish to pursue a Ph.D., along with the option to pursue it in part-time mode.
